Dimitrios Goulias, associate professor in UMD’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has received the 2021 Poole and Kent Teaching Award for Senior Faculty.

The annual award is given by the A. James Clark School of Engineering in recognition of teaching excellence.

Goulias has been awarded this honor for his dedication to his students, as both an instructor and mentor. He is renowned for his teaching of ENCE300, the junior-level course in materials that he developed over a decade ago, combining experimental laboratories and group design projects with an emphasis on teamwork and leadership.

He is also known for his multidisciplinary education abroad courses in several countries, and his students recognize his teaching innovation, enthusiasm, approachability, and professional guidance.

According to Charles W. Schwartz, professor and chair of the civil and environmental engineering department, Goulias "has selflessly and restlessly dedicated himself to the College’s teaching and educational programs and has left an indelible mark on our undergraduate and graduate students.”

“[His] engagement of undergraduate students in problem solving and experimental testing has been a deeply consuming passion, and has required a deep commitment of time and energy,” Schwartz said.
