Henry Renze is the recipient of the 2025 Outstanding Junior Award from the University of Maryland’s (UMD) Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

While growing up, Renze channeled his creativity into epic Lego forts and vehicles. Civil and environmental engineering, he says, allows him to continue being a part of the world's coolest projects. His goals are to help integrate sustainable transportation with people-centered city design, creating communities that are welcoming, united, and fun to be in.

“I appreciate the opportunity to be recognized as the 2025 Outstanding Junior in Civil Engineering,” he said. “During my time at UMD, I've had the chance to learn about fundamental math and physics concepts, brainstorm and debate engineering solutions, navigate fast-moving job sites, pick up Python, and make music with students from across campus.”

“I am thankful for the faculty and staff who have helped me grow both intellectually and as a person, pushing me to think not only about the theoretical and the abstract but what's practical for the people. Our world faces incredible technical and social challenges. It's up to us to be a part of the solution,” Renze said.
