University of Maryland (UMD) Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) faculty, staff and student researchers once again organized and participated in discussions of critical importance at the Transportation Research Board (TRB) 96th Annual Meeting January 8–12, 2017.

Held in Washington, D.C., UMD-led committee/subcommittee meetings, workshops, and presentations exemplified the theme "Transportation Innovation: Leading the Way in an Era of Rapid Change."

Jina Mahmoudi and Lei Zhang, director of the National Transportation Center at the University of Maryland (NTC@Maryland), revealed the results of their investigation into how the physical form of an entire metropolitan area influences residents’ walking behavior. Findings presented in "Impact of Metropolitan-Level Built Environment on Walking: Case Study in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland” suggests that officials interested in promoting walking should consider population and employment composition, street network connectivity, regional accessibility, and other macro characteristics when establishing land use policies.

To help busing authorities keep the system on schedule, Yao Cheng, Hyeonmi Kim, and Gang-Len Chang developed a method for reducing variances in bus pacing without delaying passenger cars by adjusting the timing of traffic signals. “Stabilizing Bus Headways by Minimizing Bus Travel Time Variance Along an Arterial” presents a passive control model that can be used in place of real-time actions known to negatively impact general traffic flow.

And in “Multi-stage Planning for Locating Charging Stations for Electric Vehicles in Urban Networks,” Kiana Roshan Zamir and Ali Haghani introduce a model for optimizing the location of electric vehicle charging stations to reduce how far out of their way drivers must go to recharge.

Additionally, eight individuals affiliated with the Center for Advanced Transportation Technology introduced UMD’s cutting-edge visualization tools during the Visualization Lightning Talks Session sponsored by the Committee on Visualization in Transportation.

NTC@Maryland and CEE also organized a special networking reception on January 9, drawing an estimated 400 transportation researchers, agency officials, and industry representatives.
