For admission into Civil Systems, students must hold a B.S. in engineering or a closely aligned technical degree and they must meet the admissions criteria for the A. James Clark School of Engineering. The evaluation criteria include overall academic record, GRE scores, strength of letters of recommendation and compatibility of student goals with those of the program. When applying to this program, students should indicate that their application is to Civil Systems.
International students must also show proof of financial resources sufficient to cover the cost of their education and living expenses for the duration of their program of study, as required by U.S. immigration and visa regulations. In addition, international students that do not hold a degree from a U.S. College or Univeirsty must furnish proof of English Language proficiency in the form of a TOEFL score.

In most cases, students who have applied to this program for fall admission by the preferred deadline should receive notification of their admission or rejection by March.
Those who applied for spring admission by October 31, should be notified of their admission
or rejection by December.
Students who have submitted all application materials may check the status of their application,
and the arrival of their supplementary application material online through the
ASF system.
U.S. and permanent residents may defer admission for up to one year after
they have received an admission letter from the Graduate School of the University of Maryland.
A request for deferment must be submitted in writing to the University of Maryland Graduate School. International students may defer their application, but not their admission.
Students who do not register for the semester for which they were admitted,
and who have not applied for and been granted a deferment, must reapply to enter the program.
All incomplete applications, including applications from international students,
that have not included proof of sufficient personal funds by May 31 (for fall admission)
and November 1 (for spring admission) will become inactive and will be withdrawn
from the system.
