The S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation has pledged $45,000 a year for four years to establish seven full scholarships that will support students majoring in civil and environmental engineering, electrical and computer engineering or mechanical engineering, especially underrepresented minorities.

The foundation said it hopes to promote the visibility of the engineering profession through its gift, as well as attract and recognize talented young engineering students and increase the number of underrepresented students in the engineering profession, particularly women and minorities.
