A. James Clark School of Engineering second-semester sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students of any discipline - including non-engineering majors - are invited to apply for either of two short-term summer courses being held in Prague, Czech Republic and in Italy, respectively. Applications for either or both of the two courses are due March 1, 2016.
The Prague course, ENCE489: Sustainability & Smart Cities, will run from May 18 - May 30. This course will expose students to different approaches for the development of sustainable and smart cities. The course will address the broad and complex "system" point of view of sustainability and smart cities, as well as the system engineering, system decomposition, and design/technical aspect. Students will examine smart cities' building blocks, such as "smart streets" or "smart buildings" as a matter of pragmatic and feasible level of details. The Italy course, ENCE489: Sustainable Green Infrastructure for the Urban Environment, will run from May 30 - June 11 and include site visits to the most important cultural and civil engineering marvels in Torino and Milano. This course will expose students to the sustainability framework, concepts, and techniques required to develop green infrastructure solutions for alternative urban structures and environments. The course will cover the principles of technical, cultural and social approaches used in the design of sustainable green urban infrastructure and students will work on the design development of "green" alternative solutions for various real case scenarios. Students interested in either program are encouraged to apply in advance of the deadline as maximum enrollment is 25 students.
