A new U.S. Geological Survey study co-authored by Associate Professor Glenn Moglen and CEE graduate student Dorianne Shivers provides researchers with new ways of predicting flooding in urban watersheds. The study developed methods of applying existing Geological Survey flood estimates, which generally apply to rural areas, to more urbanized areas by taking into consideration either the amount of impervious surfaces or existing population density within the watershed.

The majority of this study was performed while Dr. Moglen was on a sabbatical at the U.S. Geological Survey during the 2003-2004 academic year. The full study, entitled "Methods for Adjusting U.S. Geological Survey Rural Regression Peak Discharges in an Urban Setting," is part of the U.S. Geological Survey?s Scientific Investigations Report series and may be found on USGS website.
