Seven outstanding undergraduate civil and environmental engineeringstudents have received awards in recognition of their excellence as students, their accomplishments in leadership, and their service to the University of Maryland (UMD) community.

They are among 70 students in the A. James Clark School of Engineering who have selected for departmental awards this spring. 

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Outstanding Junior Award is presented to a department junior who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement.

Awarded to Joseph Anderson

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Outstanding Junior Award is presented to a department junior who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement.

Awarded to Andrew Grupp

The Robert L. Morris Award in Environmental Leadership is given to a department junior or student who has demonstrated through extracurricular activities a commitment to environmental stewardship, ethical engineering practice, or sustainable technology.

Awarded to Alexandra Miller

The American Society of Civil Engineers Outstanding Senior Award is presented to a senior member for outstanding scholastic achievement and for significant service to the chapter.

Awarded to John Nalley

The Chi Epsilon Outstanding Senior Award is presented to a department student for demonstrated leadership and service to the student engineering community.

Awarded to Emmalene Trebel

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Chair's Award is presented to a department student for the most significant contribution to the department.

Awarded to Jason Webb

The Bechtel Award for Outstanding Leadership is presented to a department student for demonstrated leadership and service to the student engineering community.

Awarded to Lilia Yousefian

About the Awardees

Joseph Anderson is a sophomore civil engineering student with a 3.96 GPA. He is a member of the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Honors Program and is the current president of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity chapter at UMD. He has interned at VIKA Maryland LLC and will intern at Sheladia Associates in Rockville, MD during summer 2021.

Andrew Grupp is a senior civil engineering student with a 3.96 GPA. He is a member of the College Park Scholars Program and the Chi Epsilon Civil Engineering Honor Society. In addition to engineering, Andrew participates in the University Band and Pep Band as a clarinet player. He has interned at NJB Engineering as a site engineer for the past year. Andrew will return to the University of Maryland this fall for a fourth year to finish his civil engineering degree and pursue a minor in project management.

Alexandra Miller is a senior civil and environmental engineering major. She is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Society, Alpha Omega Epsilon, Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, Hinman CEOs living-learning entrepreneurship program, and the Engineering Honors program. Currently, Alex serves as a math success coach, an undergraduate teaching assistant, and a member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. Alex has been accepted to Cornell, Stanford, Virginia Tech, Vanderbilt, and Duke to pursue a Master of Science in water resources and environmental engineering.

John Nalley is a senior civil engineering student and a member of the University Honors program and the Chi Epsilon National Honor Society. He currently serves as the president of the UMD chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. John is also an active member of the Maryland Student Officials Association and is a supervisor for the UMD Intramural Sports program. He looks forward to beginning his career in transportation engineering upon graduation and hopes to return to school to earn a master's degree in the future.

Emmalene Trebel graduated in December 2020 as a civil and environmental engineering major with a focus in transportation and project management. She served as the webmaster of the American Society for Civil Engineers and as the editor and president of the civil engineering honor society Chi Epsilon. Emmalene has begun her career as a project engineer with Whiting-Turner in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Jason Webb is a junior civil engineering student with a 3.99 GPA. He is a member of the University Honors program and is also minoring in Sustainability Studies. As one of the project managers for the Steel Bridge student competition team, he oversees the fabrication of the bridge and has been coordinating the logistics of competing from campus this year. Jason is currently a coding tutor for the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and previously tutored Paint Branch Elementary School students and was a Clark School Ambassador. 

Lilia Yousefian is a junior civil and environmental engineering student following the structural and geotechnical engineering track. She currently serves as the vice president of the American Society of Civil Engineers and planned the society's largest annual networking event, "Suit Up and Be Civil," in 2020. The event hosted over 300 students, professionals, and faculty as Lilia secured over 28 corporate sponsors for the event, raising generous funds for their student chapter. Lilia is also a mentor coordinator for the Women in Engineering Mentorship Program and a member of Chi Epsilon.
