Bilal Ayyub, professor of civil and environmental engineering and director of the Center for Technology and Systems Management (CTSM) at the University of Maryland (UMD), has been named a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). In the society’s 165-year history, less than 700 civil engineers have been elected to this honor.
As the highest honor bestowed by ASCE, Distinguished Membership is given to those who have attained eminence in a branch of engineering or in related arts and sciences.
Ayyub is the author and co-author of more than 600 publications, including eight textbooks and 14 edited books. He has dedicated his roughly 30-year career to the design and management of complex systems throughout their life cycle. Earlier this year, his contributions to naval standards and professional practices related to ship survivability earned him the 2016 Solberg Award from the American Society of Naval Engineers.
In addition to directing CTSM’s research efforts, Ayyub is also a strategic advisor to the UMD Center for Disaster Resilience and a chair professor at Tongji University in Shanghai, China. He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and the Society for Risk Analysis, where he also serves as treasurer.
