The Swedish Committee on Large Dams (SwedCOLD) has announced that Professor G. B. Baecher of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) will deliver the keynote address at its 2017 annual spring conference in Stockholm on April 4, 2017.

Twice a year, SwedCOLD devotes a national conference to an important theme or topic within the field of hydropower and dams. Baecher's keynote will focus on operational safety of dams and reservoirs. The presentation will summarize the results of a five-year research effort supported by a consortium of hydropower generators, including Sweden’s Energiforsk AB, Swedish Energy Research Centre.

Baecher received his BSCE from the University of California, Berkeley and PhD from MIT. From 1995 to 2003 he served as chair of CEE and is now the G.L. Martin Institute Professor of Engineering. He works on risks related to civil infrastructure, particularly in the water sector.

SwedCOLD represents Sweden as a member nation of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), of which it has been a member since 1931. SwedCOLD's objectives are to contribute to research and development within dam construction fields; contribute to the work of ICOLD through participation in technical committees, annual meetings, and congresses; and inform the public about ICOLD's work in Sweden and other important matters concerning dams.
